Cambridge Gateways
Route 50 intersects towns and villages at Kent Island, Easton, Trappe, Cambridge, Vienna, Salisbury, Berlin and Ocean City. At all but Cambridge, Route 50 bypasses and avoids the heart of the built environment. In Cambridge, the 6-lane highway narrowly misses the historic core, but still bisects the fabric of the town. The resulting is a pattern of clashing grids and a softly-curving highway through a rigid historic development pattern.
This project is designed to initiate a conversation among community leaders, City officials, landowners and residents about the impression that the built environment on Route 50 gives to those who pass through Cambridge, the impact the physical environment has on the local economy and culture, and how to best embody the character of a charming Eastern Shore waterfront town through suburban strip retail retrofit. The goal is to develop strategies that will begin to communicate to passerby that an attractive town center exists and the Eastern Shore towns are not to be missed.
Stay tuned for updates concerning this community project and ways you can get involved.
